NEW YORK (AFP) – US President Barack Obama arrived in New York on Monday for two very different meetings — a light chat on women’s television talk show and a UN General Assembly dominated by turmoil in the Middle East.
Obama is due to address the General Assembly on Tuesday morning, as the world confronts Syria’s descent into civil and the nuclear stand-off with Iran, but first he was due for a more laid back encounter with the ladies of “The View.”
The chatshow is a hit with American women, who represent 53 percent of the voters he is courting ahead of November’s presidential election, and who polls say generally prefer him over his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
On Monday evening he was at a reception for world leaders attending the UN summit, but he has delegated the task of most face-to-face bilateral talks to his secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.
This will do nothing to blunt attacks from Romney’s camp, which accuses Obama of leading a foreign policy “in disarray” and says he is “more focused on winning a second term than on rebuilding America’s strength and position in the world.”
