About 400 cars of
assorted models are at present in the custody of the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission (EFCC).
And in response to the concern that the agency has turned into a
big auto-mart, the commission has explained that the cars were either
confiscated assets of suspected fraudsters or politicians still facing trial
for graft. Some of them were seized from a former inspector general of police
and ex-governors.
Spokesman of the
commission, Wilson Uwujaren said last night in Abuja said that only the courts
could order the release of cars confiscated by the commission.
Uwujaren said most of the cars were seized from fraud suspects.
“Those cars will remain until the cases of the owners are
concluded by the court. The court may order the EFCC to give the cars back to
the suspects or to put them out for sale and recover the loot to their victims.
Those cars are assets, most of them are seizures from advance fee fraud cases
and will remain till the end of the matter,’’ he said.
The cars were said to be part of the assets confiscated from
suspects following the “assets forfeiture order’’ obtained from the court by
the EFCC.
The asset forfeiture unit put in place by the EFCC in 2008 has
the mandate to ensure that all assets forfeited to the government are
identified and verified.
