Kano
state government said students from the state would be made to boycott 2013
examination by the National Examination Council (NECO), to protest mass failure
recorded by the students in the last examination conducted by the exam body.
The state Commissioner for Education,
Barr Farouk Iya, said the state government decided to boycott the exam because
of “the unacceptable result sheet issued out to students of the state.
“The decision was that of the state
government. But if parents deemed it comfortable, they can pay for their
individual children,” he said.
He said the government decried the
“irregularities and mismanagement of exams, which is one of the reasons it is
discontinuing its relationship with the exam body”.
Meanwhile, a lecturer with Federal College
of Education (FCE), Kano, who craved for anonymity, has called for a review of
all previous engagements between the state government and NECO.
He faulted the “bio data exercise on
examination day and the exorbitant charges of N8,500 remarking fees per paper”.
In a similar development, the
proprietor of Nasara Academy, Dr. Ibrahim Victor, said the state government’s
decision was on course, urging the authorities to stand firm, “unless NECO has
resolved to effect changes in its examination process”.
All efforts to contact NECO’s Public
Relations Officer proved abortive, as he was not on seat.
