The
former governor of Ogun State and former Managing Director of the defunct Daily
Times, Chief Olusegun Osoba yesterday raised alarm over the proliferation of
social media, declaring that the practice of journalism is in danger with such
“jungle practice”.
Osoba, who spoke at the national
convention of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism Alumni Association (NIJAA),
in Abeokuta, stressed the need for the relevant bodies in the profession to
regulate and stem the tide of social media practice, which according to
him, lacked all ethical practice of the journalism profession.
The chieftain of the Action Congress
of Nigeria (ACN), who was the chairman at the occasion, said some of the
operators of such social media “know nothing about journalism but resulted in
blackmailing and publishing untrue stories at the detriment of the profession”.
Osoba, who was conferred with the
Deputy Grant Patron of the Institute, charged the Nigeria Union of Journalists
(NUJ) and other such bodies to be making regulations that will guide the
practice of journalism in the country.
Also speaking, the former Information
Commissioner in Ogun State, Deaconess Doyin Ogunbiyi charged the media
practitioners to make the profession ‘chattered’ and move away from political
unionism.
