to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, who disclosed
this when he unveiled a document on the planned projects for the centenary
celebration at a forum in Lagos on Monday, said the city was conceived to focus
the attention of the investing world on Nigeria.
“The
successes of such cities as Dubai, Monaco, Shenzhen, Singapore and lately,
Songdo, have shown that development of certain class of cities is the strongest
social, political and economic tool to secure foreign investment, promoting
positive international attention and indeed, signalling a new national economic
awakening.
“We
promise the president that in two years time, this city will emerge as the most
outstanding legacy of his administration,” he added, stating that the “smart
city” would be solely private sector driven and would be at no cost to the
government.
Speaking
further on the centenary celebration, he said, “on January 1, 1914, the
Northern and Southern protectorates of Nigeria were formally amalgamated into
one country, establishing modern day Nigeria. January 1, 2014, marks 100 years
of our union as a nation.”
Anyim
added that other areas of focus for the celebration include sports, arts,
health, amongst others, stressing that through the celebration, the country
hopes to tell its story and develop initiatives as well as projects that would
