Members of the House of
Representatives from Kano state yesterday paid a solidarity visit to Hon.
Farouk Lawan at the Kuje Prisons in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
There are 24 members of the House of
Representatives from Kano state made up of 13 PDP, 8 ANPP, 2 CPC and one ACN.
One of the lawmakers, who made the
trip confirmed to our correspondent that they were on their way to Kuje to see
Lawan.
Lawan, a four-term lawmaker, is the
oldest serving lawmaker from Kano. He was elected in 1999 and has since
been in the House.
He was chairman of the House ad hoc
committee that investigated the fuel subsidy regime.
He is standing trial over alleged
soliciting and accepting a bribe of $620,000 along with the Secretary of
his committee, Mr. Boniface Emenalo.
The accused persons were last
Thursday remanded in Kuje Prison, on the orders of Justice M.N Oniyangi, who
ruled that they be kept in prison until February 8, 2013 when the trial of the
case would be heard.
Lawan and Emenalo were charged to
court by the Attorney-General of the federation on a four count charge under
the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences (ICPC) Act.
They were alleged to have conspired
to corruptly obtain $3 million from the chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas,
Chief Femi Otedola, as inducement to remove the name of the company from the
report of the House ad–hoc committee on Fuel Subsidy Regime.
Emenalo too, was charged for failing
to report the offer of inducement to other members of the committee to which he
was a secretary and for demanding and collecting gratification of $120,000
dollars from Otedola.
Otedola also filed a civil suit
against Lawan and the Speaker of the House, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in a N250
billion case of harassment, intimidation and business loss.
