Ebonyi House of Assembly Deputy Speaker,
Valentine Okike, on Thursday suffered the fate of his first boss, Speaker
Ikechukwu Nwankweo, as he was sacked by the 24- member House.
His sin was said to be alleged
insubordination, promotion of disaffection among members and improper dressing
to official functions.
Chris Usulor, representing
Ezza South constituency, who moved the motion for his impeachment, noted that
Okike was fond of committing gross insubordination against the leadership of
the House, causing disaffection among members and dressing improperly to
official functions.
“He even wears ‘boxer’ shorts
to functions among other acts which negate the exalted office he swore an
official oath to protect”.
Member representing Ohaukwu
North constituency, Frank Onwe, seconded the motion, which was put into vote by
the Speaker, Chukwuma Nwazunku, and was voted in favour by majority of the
members.
Nwazunku said that the
impeached deputy speaker has been suspended as member of the House for two
weeks.
He said that a committee would
be constituted to thoroughly look into this matter and report back to the House
accordingly before subsequent actions would be taken.
The member representing Afikpo
South constituency, Eni Uduma, moved a motion for Okike’s replacement and
nominated Blaise Orji, representing Afikpo South East constituency.
He was seconded by Mrs Mabel
Aleke, representing Ohaukwu South constituency, as the nomination was accepted
by majority of the members.
Okike is the third member of
the House to be suspended, the other being a woman, Lilian Igwe, suspended on
grounds of alleged drunkenness.
