Kidnappers
in Delta State have taken the heinous crime to a sophisticated level by
resorting to use of the social network, facebook to hoodwink unsuspecting
users, Daily Sun has learnt. The gang of kidnappers, it was gathered, invite
their victims through facebook to a designated place in Warri area of the state
where they are abducted and negotiations for ransom made.
Several persons have already fallen to the antics of the
internet kidnappers but nemesis caught up with the gang when they tricked one
Oludoyi Samuel of Kogi State University, Ayangba to a fake birthday party in
Warri.
The victim was immediately abducted when he arrived Warri and
was taken to the hide-out of the hoodlums in Agbarho, Ughelli North Local
Government Area of the state where the gang negotiated a ransom of N300,000.00
with the victim’s mother. But the negotiation was yet to yield dividends when the
Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) attached to the Delta State Police Command
acted on a tip-off and swooped on the hideout to rescue the victim and arrested
three of the suspects.
Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Famous Ajieh
confirmed the arrest of the suspects. Ajieh said efforts had been intensified
to track down one Michael who was said to have invited the victim to the fake
birthday party and advised facebook subscribers to be wary of the kind of
friends they interact with on internet.
In a related development, an Asaba-based landlord simply
identified as Emma has been arrested by the police for allegedly leading a
robbery gang.
The 50-year-old property owner was arrested following the
confession of his gang members who disclosed that the landlord was their leader
who supervises and directs their operations. The said landlord and his gang
members allegedly deceived a lady travelling to Onitsha into a bus but diverted
to Cable Point in Asaba under the pretext of going to collect particulars.
It was gathered that when they got to Cable Point, they ordered
the lady out after robbing her of her money and personal effects and threatened
to kill her if she raised alarm.ยบ The victim escaped from the scene and
reported the matter to the police who swung into action and arrested the
suspects who later confessed that the landlord was their leader. In another
development, irate youths in Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area
of Delta State yesterday set a building belonging to a suspected kidnap kingpin
ablaze.
The suspect who has gone underground was said to have
masterminded the kidnap of his neighbour, 71-year-old Regina Obidainty
recently. The victim was allegedly shot dead in Edo State after the kidnappers
had allegedly collected N2 million ransom from her family. Peeved by the
development, the youths were said to have razed the building after hunting for
the suspect without success.
But confirming the incident, Public Relations Officer of the
Delta State Police Command, ASP Famous Ajieh exonerated youths in the
community, saying that the house was razed as a result of fire outbreak. He
said nobody at the scene of the fire could confirm whether the house was set
ablaze by anybody.
The suspected kidnap kingpin, it was gathered, was recognized by
the septuagenarian victim on the day of the kidnap before she was shot dead.
Her corpse was said to have been recovered at Igbogiri forest in Edo State.
Daily Sun learnt that when the news of the death of the victim who was
kidnapped on March 3 filtered in, the youths went wide and set the house of the
suspect on fire.
