Inspector
General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, inspected the Police College, Ikeja,
currently being rehabilitated by engineers from the Nigerian Army, following
its decrepit status, but snubbed the media.
Most of the structures in the premises, especially, lavatories,
classrooms and hostels, have witnessed tremendous improvement as their floors,
windows and roofs have either been replaced or repaired.
But after waiting for over four hours for Abubakar, who arrived
at the college with the Lagos State Commissioners of Police, Umaru Manko and
the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone II, Moamah Tsafe, was bemused
by the presence of journalists numbering about 30.
His aides, who have earlier questioned the presence of the
journalists, had enquired whether they were there on invitation, directed the
media men to wait on the lawn, preventing them from following the police boss
as he moved from one block to another.
When he completed the inspection, however, Abubakar jumped into
his vehicle and zoomed off as his aides joined the convoy.
A source said that the police boss expressed worry over the
heavy presence of journalists who may likely ask questions about the
utilisation of funds meant for the maintenance of police colleges over the
years.
The source also alleged that the police considered it an affront
the fact that the project was being handled by the Nigerian Army Engineering
Corps and not the Police Works Department.
Controversy over the state of the college started a couple of
months ago, when President Goodluck Jonathan, visited the college after an
embarrassing documentary was aired by a one of the television stations about
the dilapidated condition of the collage.
