In
spite of several pronouncements by the Peoples’ Democratic Party, [PDP]
National Working Committee, [NWC] that it enjoys a warm working relationship
with its governors, it has been confirmed that the governors are not relenting
in their agitation for the removal of the national chairman of the party,
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. Most of the governors boycotted the recent reconciliatory
tours of the Bamanga Tukur-led leadership in their respective zones.
The grand finale of the rally was equally boycotted by no fewer
than twenty of the PDP governors. A Daily Sun source disclosed that the message
was not lost on the Presidency which unlike its previous reluctance has started
considering replacement for the embattled chairman. The source did not however
confirm if Alhaji Tukur would be asked to tender his resignation, as he simply
submitted that ‘’nobody is bigger than the party.
“Initially, we thought some of the governors were merely
stubborn and heady, but the last event, which they were all expected to attend
but boycotted was the highpoint of the rebellion within and it cannot be
allowed to continue like this. Something will definitely be done to avert a
helpless situation”
The source further revealed that the meeting the chairman of the
PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Anenih had with some of the governors was
illuminating enough as they opened up on their disaffection with the
administration of the party under Alhaji Bamanga Tukur’s leadership. The former
Works Minister in his own trouble shooting initiative had met with Alhaji Sule
Lamido and Rabiu Kwankwaso, governors of Jigawa and Kano States, respectively.
‘’The governors expressed their disappointment over the
intransigence of the Tukur-led national executive to convene the national
executive committee meeting of the party. This is even in spite of the demand
for it by the governors in the communiqué issued at the end of their meeting.
The governors further told Chief Anenih that they had no issue with President
Jonathan but the man in the saddle at the party’s national secretariat. They
were very open and assured Chief Anenih that they were not going to leave the
party. ’’
Daily Sun source could however not confirm if Chief Anenih has
briefed President Goodluck Jonathan on his revealing discussions with some of
the governors. But when asked yesterday at a media briefing on the agitation of
governors for the convening of the PDP NEC meeting, Alhaji Tukur assured that
the meeting would soon hold.
“I am going to summon NEC meeting soon,’’ he told journalists.
Efforts to seek the response of Presidential Adviser to the President on
Political Matters, Barrister Ali Ahmed Gulak did not yield results as he failed
to pick his calls and did not respond to text messages from Daily Sun reporter
.
