SAMBO, POWERLESS NORTHERN LEADER – ELDERS’ FORUM

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has said that while Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo being the highest public office holder from the region is the leader of North, he is however powerless because he has no constitutional powers as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.
Former minister of Agriculture and a member of the Forum, Alhaji Sani Zangon Daura, stated this on behalf of the forum during an interview
with DITV monitored in Kaduna yesterday.

He added that Sambo has no support of Northern governors, adding that he was warned not to accept the offer to be vice president made to him by President Goodluck Jonathan in May 2010, following the demise of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
He said, “When we heard that he will be made vice president, we sent
direct emissaries to him that he should not accept the offer, because
it has no use and he will just be a portrait.
“In the Constitution, we are using; he has no use and will do nothing. We warned him not to accept, nobody is powerful like governor, just like no one is powerful than the President at the top.
“There is nothing he can do, and if God has helped us for governors
to be with him, because they are not with him unlike what it was during
Atiku with Northern governors, he will have been powerful, but they
are not with him today. If they are together they will have been
working together and we are certain they are not.
“We always intimate him, like when we met the president, he was aware, but we are careful so that we don’t create problem of loyalty between them; like it happened during Obasanjo and Atiku.”
