*You are reckless, Gani Adams replies
National coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC),
Otunba Gani Adams has described as untrue and reckless a statement by the
group’s founder and president, Dr. Frederick Fasehun to the effect that he
(Gani) had been suspended from the association six years ago.
Fasehun had during an exclusive interview with the Saturday
Newswatch stated that Adams could not speak for the OPC because he
(Fasehun) suspended him six years ago. Fasehun had also urged the public to
probe the sources of Adams’ wealth. “You people should ask how he made his
money as a carpenter,” he urged. However, Adams, in a telephone interview with
our reporter stated that the OPC had since been factionalised with both of them
leading different factions.
He, however, advised the founder of the group to resign his
position in the group since he is desperately striving to reregister the
defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), wondering how he hopes to manage a
non-partisan organisation with a political party without suffering conflict of
interests. He said: “We are not running the same organisation; we have two
parallel organisations namely: Gani Adams-led OPC and Fasehun-led OPC.
“Fasehun is no longer a member of the OPC since his
declaration to float a political party because he cannot run a partisan party
with the OPC; he can no longer deceive Nigerians. He is now with the UPN;
he should resign his membership of the OPC; he is no longer a member of the
OPC,” he advised. Also reacting to the allegation of corruptly enriching
himself to the tune of billions through “dirty jobs for interested bidders,”
Gani denied being a billionaire but maintained that he is comfortable though
because of his steadfastness on the course of the group.
He said: “You can’t expect somebody leading about seven
million people to remain poor. He is either not aware or has forgotten that I
have other business investments like buying and selling of landed properties.
“If you are fighting a genuine course in Yorubaland, you cannot be poor. I am
rich because people have believed in my genuine struggle for Yorubaland and
they appreciate me for that,” he said.
Gani , however, challenged Fasehun to openly defend himself
on the alleged millions of naira collected to polish the image of late Gen.
Sani Abacha when he allegedly said: “He (Abacha) would have been the best
president for Nigeria if he had not died.”
“It would be recalled that Fasehun organised three rallies
for Obasanjo; now it is the turn of Hamza Al-Mustapha who he supported with all
his might,” he pointed, adding that “Fasehun built a bridge in Okota and he is
collecting N200 as tolls, imagine! He does not do anything for free.
“As young as I am, I run a foundation called Gani Adams
Foundation through which I spend about N3 million yearly. Let him (Fasehun) now
at 80 years come to tell us such investment in human development as I do. He
still uses his Century Hotels as OPC headquarters while I rent an apartment at
Palm Groove for the same exercise.”
He said Fasehun introduces his personal assistant, Taofeek
Adeyemi and his factional OPC secretary, Dare Adesope, as the UPN Deputy
National Organising Secretary and National Publicity Secretary respectively,
urging him to desist from transferring the OPC staff and members to his UPN.
