OYO INTRODUCES EMISSON TAX
THE Oyo State government has introduced a law that will curb indiscriminate emission of gaseous substances to protect the environment.
Commissioner for Environment, Mr Lowo Obisesan, who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with the Nigerian Tribune, said violators of the law would be liable to prosecution.
He said the state government had engaged consultants to galvanise the process of enforcing the law.
“This is not strictly about revenue generation alone. We observed that industries and heavy duty vehicles emit smoke that can be injurious to our people when they go near them.
“I have been going to those companies and they are changing their old machineries. But I cannot go everywhere. That is why we have engaged consultants to assist us in curbing the manace,” he said.
Obisesan noted that the government, apart from the new environment measure, had put in place measures to curb flood as various agencies had been warning that when the rains start, there could be flooding in the state.
He said while government would not encumber the people of the state, it would not condone acts that would make law abiding citizens of the state to be susceptible to environmental hazards.
