Acting governor of Taraba state, Alhaji Garba Umar, was yesterday
barred from receiving Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai, who arrived Jalingo,
the state capital, after 10 months of medical sojourn in both Germany and the
United States of America.
The governor, who was expected in the state capital city by 10.00am, arrived Jalingo airport around 3.52pm, via Izy Air Nigeria Limited, in company of some friends and two American doctors.
On arrival at the airport, the frail looking governor was
received by his wife, Mrs Hauwa Danbaba Suntai. After being helped down from
the plane by some aides, he exchanged pleasantries with some top government
functionaries and, thereafter, he was quickly aided into a waiting car that
drove through major streets of Jalingo en route to the Government House. The governor, who was expected in the state capital city by 10.00am, arrived Jalingo airport around 3.52pm, via Izy Air Nigeria Limited, in company of some friends and two American doctors.
When the acting governor made an attempt to walk to the tarmac to receive the
governor, he was blocked by some thugs who were shouting, munafuki (hypocrite),
dan cin amana (betrayer).
The thugs, who overwhelmed the acting governor’s
security officials, refused to allow Umar to get close to Suntai and shake his
hands as several others did when the governor disembarked from the Izy
aircraft.
To avoid a breakdown of law and order, however, Umar went back to his house on Jolly Nyame Way in Jalingo.
Political loyalists and sympathisers took to the streets of Jalingo to catch a glimpse of the governor, just as there was heavy presence of security. At the airport, the space was taken over by military men under the command of a Colonel.
The state commissioner for information, Mr Emmanuel Bello, told journalists that after about 13 hours in the air, the governor was exhausted and would only speak to the media today (Monday).
Suntai was injured in a crash involving a plane he was piloting near Yola, the Adamawa sate capital, along with three of his security aides in October last year. He was evacuated to the Yola Specialist Hospital and later to the National Hospital, Abuja, before he was moved to Germany and USA.

Some media houses (excluding Blueprint) speculated that he had
damaged his brain as a result of the accident.
The speculation was sustained by the long period it took Suntai to recover his health and return to the country yesterday.
