The former governor of the defunct Kaduna State and chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Lawal Kaita, has insisted that the only option available for northern Nigeria is to close ranks so as to clinch the presidency in 2015.
Speaking to newsmen in Katsina, Kaita said to regain its lost glory, the north must unite “and produce a president of northern extractionregardless of tribe or religion.”
According to him, “What we need is a northerner who is passionate about the north and who will defend out integrity.”
He insisted that the north needed to close ranks so as to ensure an end to the dehumanising treatment it is currently receiving.
The PDP chieftain decried the current crisis in the party and warned that, if not addressed quickly, the situation could signal the end of the PDP.
“PDP has been wounded. The breaking away of these seven governors and key figures is a serious injury to the PDP and if it continues, the PDPwill die,” he noted, saying that “this is happening because of the way the country and the party are being managed.”
He said it was good that the rebellion from the PDP was being spearheaded by the governors who were accused of bringing President Jonathan in the first place.
Kaita insisted that the nation’s politics and politicians had derailed as, according to him, there was no longer fair elections in the country but anointment, even as he called for secret ballot system to be changed as it aids rigging.
“During our days, the voting was done in the open and in a queue whereeveryone sees everyone, but now, they just enter room and allocate votes,” he said.
