Former
military governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (rtd), has warned
the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), not to allow former President
Olusegun Obasanjo, hijack the crisis rocking the party.
Speaking exclusively with Daily
Sun, Umar said the crisis was a storm and should not be allowed to
degenerate into a hurricane through external forces.
Umar
noted that bickering was expected in a party like the PDP, which is a large
party, saying the mistake is to allow external forces to hijack the minor
crisis.
He
called on the leadership of the party, particularly the Presidency, to bring
back the aggrieved members into its fold so that the polity is not overheated
unnecessarily.
“I am
talking of the involvement of elders like General Obasanjo, who was not at the
convention, but as soon as he saw the crisis, which some of us called a storm
and kick-off, he presented himself as a mediator. He summoned the meeting of
elders.
“That
can only complicate issues because what is there that is happening in the PDP
today that did not happen during Obasanjo’s time? Is it about internal
democracy that people are talking about which happened under General Obasanjo?
Remember, three Senate presidents were impeached during his time, two
governors, Joshua Dariye and Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, were also removed without
the state Assemblies forming a quorum.
“So,
what I am simply saying, is that this kind of crisis or storm, is expected in a
party that claims to be the largest party in Africa. But things will get
complicated if opportunists are allowed to intervene and interfere,” Umar said.
