As part of the prisoner transfer deal talks going on between the British and Nigerian government, James Onanefe Ibori, former governor of Delta State who is currently serving a jail term in Britain might be among Nigerian prisoners to be transferred to Nigerian prisons to complete their jail terms according to a report by a British newspaper.
The United Kingdom prisons minister, Jeremy Wright told Mail online, a British online newspaper that, talks are continuing with the various governments including Nigeria on prisoner transfer deals.
If the deal went through, according to Wright, it will see more than half of the 534 prisoners from Nigeria currently in UK jails repatriated to Nigerian prisons.
Britain had earlier promised to build new prisons in some countries including Nigeria for the prisoner transfer deal. It also promised to provide one million pounds to the Nigerian government to upgrade some prisons in the country including Kirikiri prison in Lagos and other prisons across the country.
During a visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Interior Comrade Abba Moro in September, the British High Commissioner who was also the Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, Dr. Andrew Pocock, discussed the issue of prisoner transfer agreement between the two countries.
