KANO CANCELS DURBAR OVER EMIR’S HEALTH

The Kano Emirate Council on Wednesday said the traditional Durbar to commemorate the Eid-el-Kabir celebration had been cancelled due to the health condition of the Emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The 700-year-old Durbar was similarly cancelled last year also on the grounds of the Emir’s health.
Last year was the first time the annual Durbar would be cancelled. The Emir of Kano traditionally hosts the Durbar to mark and celebrate the two annual Muslim festivals, Eid-el-Fitr and Eid-el-Kabir.
The Durbar culminates in a procession of highly elaborately dressed horsemen who pass through the city to the Emir’s palace. Once assembled near the palace, groups of horsemen, each group representing a nearby village, take it in turns to charge towards the Emir, pulling up just feet in front of the seated dignitaries to offer their respect and allegiance.

District Head of Dala, Alhaji Aminu Bayero, told journalists on Wednesday that all traditional activities planned for this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration, including the Durbar, had been cancelled.
The other traditional Sallah activities affected by the development are Hawan Sallah, Hawan Daushe, Hawan Nasarawa and Hawan Dorayi.
Aminu, however, did not give details about the health of the Emir.
The district head also said that the riding of horses in Kano Metropolis by youths had been outlawed.
He said the decision was taken because some of the youths rode the horses in manners that could endanger the lives of the masses, particularly children.
The district head warned that anyone who flouted the order would be arrested and prosecuted, saying the Emirate would not fold its arms and allow such horse riders to continue to constitute a nuisance in the city.
He urged the people to pray for peace in the state and the country.
