The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar has justified the recent ban on political and religious gatherings at the nation’s airports.
The IGP made this known in an interview with journalist on the sideline of the production of a radio jingle to celebrate this year’s Human Rights Day in Nigeria.
IGP Abubakar who together with the Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, Hans-Rudolf Hodel, partnered to produce the radio jingle at a private broadcast station in Abuja, said the ban on gatherings at airports does not infringe on citizens rights to assembly.
According to him, “tell me any country in the world where people go with brooms and sticks and what not? That is not human rights, we say if they want to do it they can go and do it somewhere else.”
“But at international airports and local airports where passengers come, the security of the airport is important; you cannot allow such to happen at the airports,” adding that “you have rights to assembly, but is airport a public place?”
IGP Abubakar also noted that the police have introduced human rights in most of its institutions with curriculums and models that will better inform the police on Human Rights.
He said, “We are developing a program that officers and men of the service will go through, we have introduced human rights in most of our institutions, we have done curriculums and models that you can look at and say yes!.”
“We have done code of conduct, and code of conduct is the key factor for any police officer to know his limit, from the rank of constable to Inspector General of Police, this is what you can do and what you cannot do,” IGP Abubakar added.
On his part, the Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, Hans-Rudolf Hodel, told Journalist that the best proof of cooperation is the partnership with the Nigerian police to campaign for human rights in Nigeria.
He further said that, the embassy will present a manual for all officers and police persons to make them much better informed concerning human rights and their contract with the citizens.
