The crisis rocking Kaduna State House of Assembly reached its climax on Tuesday night, following the refusal of about 14 lawmakers to attend a dinner with the state governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero.
The chairman, House Committee on Information, Hon. Yakubu Yusuf, had through a text message extended an invitation to all the 34 members for a dinner with the state governor.
The text which read: “My dear honourable colleagues, I am directed to please invite you to attend a special dinner with his Excellency the executive governor, today (Tuesday) November 19, 2013 by 7:30 pm at State House,” was not honoured by 14 members of the House who alleged that the dinner was a ploy to lobby them to recognise the present leadership of the House.
One of the members who shunned the dinner told our correspondent that he and other 13 lawmakers who refused to attend the event did so to show they were not loyal to the governor.
“When we got the invitation to a dinner with the governor, the 16 of us decided that we are not going to attend the parley, but on a second thought, we agreed to send two of our members to attend the meeting to monitor the discussion and get back to us. We refused to attend the dinner because all is not well in the Assembly and the governor seems to be the one behind the crises,” he said.
He alleged that the governor at the parley told the lawmakers in attendance that he would soon send the list of commissioner-nominees and pleaded with them to clear all the commissioners and pass a vote of confidence in his administration.
“The governor also told them that he was also preparing to present the 2014 budget and pleaded that the Assembly consider and approve every request send to them. We knew that will happen and that was why we stayed away,” the lawmaker said. When contacted on the matter, the spokesman of the Governor, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki simply said the lawmaker who divulged the details of the meeting to our correspondent was a mischief-maker.
