AREGEBSOLA MOVES TO CREATE 27 NEW COUNCILS

Osun State Governor. Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, on Monday sent a bill to the House of Assembly, asking the lawmakers for an approval to create 27 new Local Council Development Areas in the state.
The gov
ernor, who presented the bill, explained that the move to increase the number of councils in the state was aimed at ensuring that development was spread to every area in the state.
The state already has 30 local government areas and one area office to make the number 31.

He said the state government had earlier set up a committee headed by former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Prof. Mojeed Alabi, to look at requirements for the creation of new councils in line with Sections 7 and 8 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
While urging the House to favourably consider the bill, the governor stated that “the new councils would operate a parliamentary system of government in order to avoid financial constraints.”
According to him, the Local Government Creation Committee recommended that the 27 Local Government Areas to be created. He added that many factors were considered in the selection of the new councils.
