A chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former minister of transportation, Ebenezer Babatope, on Monday in Lagos, described the actions of the G7 governors that pulled out of the party as lacking in understanding and experience.
Speaking to Daily Independent at a one-day retreat organised for Governing Council of the Yaba College of Technology, Babatope said PDP is not in any way disturbed by the actions of the members of the new PDP group, adding that they have failed to learn from history of rebellion.
He said: “Their actions showed that they lack experience; were they to be exposed enough, they would realised that they have started a process that may lead to committing a political suicide. You don’t fight your party.
There are institution-based system within the party such that when you loose such, you create a problem for yourself”.
Querying their rationale for leaving the party, Babatope who is the Chairman, Governing Council of YABATECH, said there are no assurances that the rebellious governors will get as much as the PDP had given to then.
Going down memory lane, he said history is replete with facts that no rebellion within any political party either in Nigeria or in other places around the world has succeeded.
According to him, “Mbadiwe and Chief Kola Balogun did it in 1958 and they failed. My late friend, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, and one other person did it against Alhaji Aminu Kano of People Redemption Party (PRP), they both failed. And in other climes, Labour Party in the UK and in China, where a gang of four that included the wife of Chairman, Mao, revolted against the Communist Party in China, they failed”.
“It is not that they are failing because they had to fail. It is because once a person announces a rebellion and it does not respect the constitutional provisions of the party they are bound to fail”, he added.
Dismissing impression that the Presidency was jittery at the development, he warned that if they succeeded in going away as announced, then they should be ready to work harder to give PDP electoral battle to win elections in their respective states.
He added that if they show remorse for their actions and decided to rejoin the party, they will be welcomed back into the PDP fold.
The governors are Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Abdulfattah Ahmed (Kwara) and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).
But their counterparts who have since distanced themselves from the deal are Babangida Muazu Aliyu (Niger) and Sule Lamido (Jigawa).
