JONATHAN PLANS ELECTION-YEAR CABINET DURING YULETIDE

The long awaited major shakeup in President Goodluck Jonathan’s team may happen during the Christmas and New Year holidays, a source has confided in THISDAY.
According to the source, the
prospects look very grim, and this is making some top members of the government jittery and already planning their retirement, as the year winds down.
The source further noted that all was now set for Jonathan to rejig every apparatus of government, from his image makers to the topmost level of his inner cabinet, which he intends to fill with politicians who can, in the words of the source, “deliver”.

The source said, “Very top people might be affected by this. In fact, what he did recently is child’s play compared to what he is planning. By the time he is done, the face of the federal executive council itself would have changed. The president wants to shop for men and women who would make his 2015 ambition come through. He was advised that certain individuals in his cabinet had become a serious liability and, therefore, ought to go to restore credibility to government and to pave the way for a great campaign as we head into the election year.”
Speaking on the calibre of staff members the president is trying to recruit, the source said they must be people who could help him win the presidential election. Because of this, Jonathan may drop some technocrats in the government and replace them with “politically viable” nominees who command the respect of their constituencies, said the source.
He said, “The president is in a war mood and wants to surround himself with the right lieutenants from his support staff to the cabinet members.”
Even the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party is not spared the planned restructuring, as its national chairman, Bamanga Tukur, may be eased out before next year. The source noted that some names were already being considered as Tukur’s replacement.
In his words, “The president has finally caved in over the issue of Tukur. He can’t afford to see the party collapse in his time.
