APC NOT ISLAMIC PARTY – LAI MUHAMMED

Interim National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Party (APC), Alhaji Lai Muhammed, has corrected the impression in some quarters that the party is an Islamic party.
Blaming political foes of the party for the notion, he said: “It is in their desperation to pull the APC down that they have now labelled it an Islamic party.”
Addressing a press conference in Lagos yesterday, the APC spokesman described the political opponents’ antics as ‘dangerous’, warning that, no country that had brought religion into politics remained intact.
“We have not even registered members, hence they could not have carried out any survey to say our members are all Muslims,” Muhammed pointed out, adding that, “our interim executive have 35 members – 18 Muslims and 17 Christians, the best balance you can achieve in an odd number division.”

He described the APC as a party for all Nigerians, irrespective of their religion, adding that the party was glad that the dangerous game of the PDP had blown up in its face.
He expressed delight that, “Nigerians have repudiated the characterization of our party as an Islamic Party,” and hoped that, “the PDP will realize its faux pas and apologize to Muslims in particular and all Nigerians in general.”
Alhaji Muhammed wondered “how a party that has a Muslim as chairman is disparaging Muslims and inferring that it is a violent religion.”
On the crisis that is allegedly to tearing the APC apart, Muhammed dismissed the insinuation with a wave of the hand saying: “It is nothing but a storm in a tea cup.”
According to him, the crisis was being exaggerated by those who could not understand the runaway acceptability of the party in such a short tim.
He explained that, “the so-called crisis is nothing beyond the ability of our leadership to resolve, and we are doing just that.”
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to ignore those who were trying to orchestrate a crisis where there was none.
