JUNGLE JUSTICE: LAGOS VOWS TO PUNISH OFFENDERS

Lagos State government yesterday warned that it would henceforth bring the full weight of the law down on anybody caught engaging in jungle justice.
State Attorney-General and Commissioner for
Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, said anybody caught engaging in such act would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
Ipaye gave the warning while responding to questions from journalists on the Ejigbo incidence during the monthly press briefing of his ministry held at the Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja.
The attorney-general said the culprits who were involved in the alleged torture of a woman and her two daughters said to have stolen pepper in Ejigbo market would soon appear before a court of competent jurisdiction.
He said the police are currently investigating the matter and that once that is concluded and the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, is received, government would commence prosecution of the matter.

He added that the Office of the Public Defender, OPD, was part of the public hearing on the Ejigbo matter and that it was on its advice that the Ejigbo market was shut.
He said the closure of the market forced the people to produce those who meted out such heinous punishment on the women.
Ipaye added that it was unfortunate that the video footage of the incident was circulated rather too late.
“But I can assure you that if there is any case we are very much interested in, it is this case. That is because we want to discourage such ugly acts from happening again in this state,” he said.
The Lagos attorney general said that the civil suit instituted in respect of the victims of January 2012 fuel subsidy victims has been concluded and that the court awarded N4 million in their favour as damages while the criminal suit against the former Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Pen Cinema Police Station, Agege, Mr. Segun Fabunmi was on-going.
