Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State, yesterday warned that only a corrupt- free and God-fearing person will succeed him in 2015.
The governor’s position came few hours after the Benue Integrity Group (BIG) commenced the grilling of gubernatorial aspirants on planned policies and programmes if elected ahead next year’s general election.
Suswam, who spoke on Harvest FM Radio, yesterday in Makurdi, stated that the endemic corruption and greed ravaging the society today was because most elected leaders are corrupt and not God-fearing, insisting that non-God-fearing leaders embezzle public funds.
He tasked Benue electorate to be careful with the calibre of people that approach them seeking their votes, and further debunked the rumour that he has anointed a particular aspirant as ‘government candidate’, and tasked all aspirants to sell themselves to the people.
“I would like to have the governor, who would succeed me with just one quality-he must be a Godfearing person.
If you are a God-fearing person, you will not embezzle people’s money; you will not engage in diabolical tendencies; you will not go out to undermine the people that you represent”.
“And I want the people of Benue State to be careful in electing people to represent or govern them, and you know as usual, in Benue politics, by now, you should have been hearing stories that this is Suswam’s candidate.
But you will not hear that. It is not an express thing because we want the people of Benue State to look at the people and their antecedents and make a right choice”.
“People are contesting from zones A, B and C, but at the end of the day, we will sit down together and say look, the position is going here and even when we decide that it’s going to a particular place, people from other places will not agree that they have constitutional right to contest.”
