SECURITY: AGAIN, PRESIDENT JONATHAN SUMMONS ALL 36 GOVS NEXT WEEK

President Goodluck Jonathan has again summoned all the 36 state governors for an emergency security meeting scheduled for next Wednesday.
This was the outcome of an "expanded
" security meeting held Thursday with governors elected on the platforms of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), APGA and Labour Party as well as members of the National Security Council.

Those in attendance were the governors of Ondo, Anambra Katsina, Taraba, Cross River, kogi, Kaduna, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Gombe, Plateau, Jigawa, Deltan, Enugu, Benue, Abia and Akwa Ibom.

None of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors was in attendance.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting that lasted for two hours, Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio said only PDP governors were invited for today's meeting.

Asked why Ondo and Anambra governors who are not of the PDP attended the meeting, Akpabio said he personally invited them.

He said Jonathan told them at the meeting that the current security challenge is a national issue, he (the president) insisted on meeting all the 36 state governors on Wednesday, next week.

But presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, had said in a statement on Wednesdaythat at 1.00pm today, Jonathan would have an enlarged meeting on security developments in the country to which he had invited state governors.

Abati did not indicate that only PDP governors were invited.

He said the president, members of the National Security Council and the state governors would review the security situation in the country as well as ongoing national security measures and operations with a view to determining the best way forward.

Akpabio said the current security challenge should not be politicised, saying he expected all governors to honour the president's invitation for Wednesday's meeting.

Akpabio expressed optimism that next week's meeting would proffer lasting solutions to the security challenge facing the country.

Earlier, Abia State Governor Theodore Orji told journalists that it was the PDP governors that initiated today's meeting with the president, affirming that APC governors were not invited.
