Soldiers at a checkpoint in Damagum town of Yobe State opened fire at a vehicle conveying corpses when it lost one of its tyres, shooting three of the soldiers in it.
Few hours when the wounded soldiers were conveyed to the hospital in Potiskum, few kilometers away from the town for treatment, one of the soldiers passed away as he could not make it.
Eye witnesses in Damagum told Nigerian Pilot Sunday on phone that the incident happened around 12.30 pm.
According to the witnesses, the vehicle carrying the corpses was coming from Damaturu and going to Potiskum “and it seems the soldiers were from Maiduguri in Borno State.
“Nobody knows yet, but they were suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents when the tyre busted,” he said.
“The soldiers at the checkpoint were thinking it was a bomb explosion from the vehicle,” he added.
However, efforts to speak to the state Commissioner of Police Sanusi Rufai for confirmation failed, while the Yobe PPRO was said to be out of the state on official assignment.
