‘WHY WE CAN’T INCREASE YOUTH CORPS ALLOWANCES’

The director general of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen Johnson Olawumi, yesterday stated that the increase of corps members’ allowances would be subject to availability of funds.

awumi who was reacting to calls by some delegates of the National Conference for increase of Corps members’ allowances stated that so many other things were competing for the scheme’s scarce resources.
“We must appreciate the efforts of government in keeping the scheme alive in view of the enormous resources that it chucked into it every year,” he said.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the commander, Guards Brigade, Nigeria Army in his office, the DG disclosed that the scheme was being repositioned to address the problem of youth unemployment which constitutes one of the major causes of insecurity in the nation.

He stated that the NYSC came to be 41 years ago to foster unity in the country adding that with the problem of youth unemployment, the repositioning of the scheme will create an avenue to make youths in the country become job creators instead of seekers.
He disclosed that the scheme has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bank of Industry (BoI) so as to aid corps members that have acquired entrepreneurial skills. This is to give them access to loans from the Bank to help them pursue their businesses.
Olawumi who emphasised the importance of the Guards Brigade through its competence and capability, promised that the scheme would continue to encourage good relationship with it and pleaded with it to allow the NYSC football team use its field for training.
