EMERGENCY RULE: POSTERITY’LL JUDGE ADVOCATES OF EXTENSION – NYAKO

Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State has maintained that only God and posterity would judge his resolution to stand by the people even against powerful forces whose agenda was to subject the people to perpetual hardship.
The governor, who made the statement through his director of press and public affairs, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, was responding to a question on whether the government was strategizing to scuttle the extension of the emergency rule ahead of Tuesday’s Senate plenary where the final decision on the subject will be adopted.
Nyako said as a leader he had done his best to ensure that the emergency rule was not extended, adding that despite his opposition to the extension of the emergency rule he has limitations as he has no powers to force the legislatures to do his bidding.
Nyako said it does not make any sense for a government to keep adopting the same procedure to solve a problem even though previous experimentation has only resulted in the escalation of the problem.

“This is the third time the federal government is extending the emergency rule in the three states but it seems that, with every renewal of the rule, the security situation in the three states keeps degenerating, which calls for strategy review,” he said.
He said it was glaring that the refusal of President Jonathan to invite the three governors for a meeting to review the security situation before the extension was contemplated was an indictment on the federal government that did not want to listen to voices of reasoning but wanted to use its powers to repress and subjugate the people.
“The three states are currently under military occupation and the situation was even made worse by the fact that the military are carrying out their operations without paying scant respect for rule of engagement, which make them lose the confidence and cooperation of the people,” he said.
He added that the current doubt being expressed by the US soldiers as well as other senior political officeholders in America and elsewhere about the insincerity of the federal government to resolve the insurgency was a vindication of Governor Nyako’s previous statements about the lacklustre attitude of the federal government in the fight against insurgency, which unfortunately made him be in the black book of the federal government.
