• Another six die in Kaduna village clash
No fewer than eight persons were confirmed dead, while 12 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, following a bomb explosion, which rocked the popular School of Hygiene, located on Bayero University, Kano old site, in the pyramid ancient city of Kano at noon yesterday.
The School of Hygiene, located opposite Sabon Kofar, was hit by the explosion at about 2:05 pm and destroyed about eight vehicles parked within the school premises.
Contacted, the state Police Commissioner, Adenrele Shinaba, who confirmed the bomb blast, disclosed to newsmen at the scene of incidence that an unidentified suspect has been arrested and is being interrogated.
Shinaba said “we are yet to establish whether the bomb was planted inside the school premises or was primed inside a vehicle but all we can say is that an explosion occurred in the School of Hygiene, Old site, BUK road at about 2:05 P.M.”
According to him, the bodies of the dead have been deposited at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital mortuary, while the injured were evacuated to the emergency ward of the hospital.
He stated further: “I want to confirm to you that 20 people were rushed to the hospital but eight were confirmed dead and 12 injured.”
It was learnt that the students had assembled in the school for registration and soon after some of them concluded observance of their after afternoon prayers and were about to file out of the school premises when the deafening explosion occurred.
An eyewitness account told our Daily Newswatch that among the dead was a Fulani woman, who had come to sell local drink, Fura Dai Nono, in the school.
According to the Personal Assistant to the school provost, Malam Abdulkarim Umar Bashir, the Provost, Dr. Ado H. Bello escaped unhurt by the whiskers, as according to him, “I just left the mosque shortly after the afternoon prayer, I saw the provost in his blue Matrix car, attempting to park and as soon as I removed the parking sign-board, the provost drove into the parking lot and in a twinkle of an eye, an explosion occurred but thanks be to God that I and the provost escaped unhurt.”
Meanwhile, the scene has been cordoned off by the police anti-bomb squad, combing the entire arena, as well as evacuating dismembered bodies that littered the scene, as well as to ascertain the manner of the explosion.
Meanwhile, about six persons have been reported killed in Kaduna State in a violence that erupted at Fadan- Chawai, Kauru Local Government Area of the state following an announcement of the appointment of a new paramount Chief of Tsam, Res-Tsam, by the state government and an attack from gunmen within the same area over the weekend.
Two persons were said to have died from the crisis involving the appointment of the new chief, four others were killed by unidentified gunmen in two separate villages of the state.
When contacted on the development, spokesman, Kaduna State Police Command, SP Aminu Lawan, said “I am not aware but give me some time to contact relevant persons and find out from them,” what actually happened.
Daily Newswatch gathered that properties worth millions of naira were also destroyed and set ablaze by rampaging youths, who have vowed not to accept the chief appointed by the state government.
A man and his wife were reportedly killed in Rikarwan Village, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area by unidentified gunmen, while another man, Dauda Maidawa and his wife, Alheri, said to have gone to their farm located at Fadan-Karshi, Sanga Local Government Area in the early hours of Saturday, were later found dead by a search party.
The Rikarwan couple, Ayuba Kure and Sarah, were killed in their house when gunmen attacked the community, injuring four others on Sunday night.
An eyewitness account has it that “The gunmen came on Sunday night with dangerous weapons, killed the couple and injured four others. You know our communities are isolated and no one knows the mission of the gunmen,” a cousin to the Karshi victims, John Joseph, said.
According to him, the matter was reported to the DPO at Fadan-Karshi Police Station, who then mobilised for a search that led to the discovery of the remains of his brother and the wife.
However, the death of the former Res Tsam, Alhaji Danlami Yahaya, on April 6, 2014, had, before now, created crisis, which made the Chawai Development Association to institute a court case at a High Court in Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government Area.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, National President, Chawai Development Association (CDA), Chief Augustine Audi, said the governor’s order for the Chawai Council of Kingmakers to nominate and send to him the name of the son of the late Res Tsam for appointment caused the crisis that claimed two persons.
“As a result of the appointment and announcement of the new Res Tsam by Kaduna State governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, violence erupted in the chiefdom, leading to the killing of two people, while several properties were destroyed by the rampaging youths in the area.
However, when contacted, media aide to Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Maiyaki, said “nobody was killed, and everything is peaceful and calm.”
The Federal Government on Monday expressed displeasure “Over the continued acts of senseless killing of innocent Nigerians” by suspected insurgents in the country.
Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mike Omeri, expressed the displeasure in a reaction to the explosion which rocked Kano on Monday.
