Impeached Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako, is being hunted by security operatives over allegations of money laundering, theft, abuse of office and treason.
Security operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the State Security Services, SSS and the Nigeria Police, told Nigerian Pilot yesterday that they were monitoring Nyako’s movements, particularly in his state and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
An EFCC source said Nyako, who was impeached on Tuesday, has a series of petitions hanging on him. Others being monitored by the EFCC are his son, Abdulazeez Nyako, a zonal manager with a new generation bank and some top government officials under his administration.
He said they would be made to account for N43billion they looted from the treasury.
Nigerian Pilot further learnt that Nyako will also face the Department of State Security Services, DSS, over allegations of treason and other crimes.
Prior to his removal, the Federal Government, through Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, hinted of moves to file a six-count charge of treason against Nyako over the letter he wrote to the northern governors accusing President Jonathan and his administration of genocide.
Meanwhile, former Deputy Governor of the state, Barr Bala James Ngilari, has said that the House of Assembly compelled him to resign from office.
He said he did not send his resignation letter to his then boss as demanded by the 1999 Constitution as amended.
Former Speaker of the House and now Acting Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri had on Tuesday, before the impeachment of Nyako, read Ngilari’s resignation letter.
Responding to the controversy trailing his resignation yesterday, Ngilari said:
“The truth is that I have not sent any letter of resignation to the governor up till now, because representatives of the House only came to my house yesterday (Tuesday)asking me to tender my resignation and asked me to address the letter to the Speaker which I did.”
He continued: “When the lawmakers led by the Deputy Speaker met and asked me to write the resignation, I wrote it to the governor but later on they came and said that I should change it and address it to the Speaker.”
When asked whether he signed the letter under duress, Ngilari said he simply sent the resignation letter to the Speaker as requested.
Meanwhile, Nyako, yesterday called for the reinstatement of his deputy as the governor of the
state, following his illegal removal.
Nyako, who spoke through his Director of Press, Mallam Ahmadu Sanjoh, in a statement made available to journalists in Yola, said: “Our attention has been drawn to the purported resignation of the deputy governor of Adamawa State, Barrister Bala James Ngilari which was supposedly read on the floor of the State House of Assembly.
“We wish to state categorically that Section 306 (5) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended requires that the deputy resign not to the House of Assembly but to the Governor. As at the time the supposed resignation was said to have been tendered in the House, Murtala Nyako was the governor of Adamawa state.
“No such letter was written to him, none was received by him and none was approved by him. It should therefore be known that in the eyes of the law, the deputy governor has not resigned. Barrister Bala James Ngillari is still the Deputy Governor of Adamawa State,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fintiri (Acting Governor) has performed his maiden function by appointing Prof. Liman Tukur as Secretary to the State Government, SSG.
The acting governor said the appointment of Tukur was based on his excellent record of service and outstanding performance.
