TERRORISM: ARMY WARNS PERSONNEL AGAINST MISUSE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Kenneth Minimah, has cautioned officers and men of the Nigerian Army in the use of the social media.
He admonished those using the new technolog
ical innovation to spread falsehood about the service, particularly the prosecution of the ongoing war against insurgents in parts of the country, as well as exposing the strength and perceived weaknesses of the service.
Gen. Minimah gave the charge yesterday while addressing soldiers of the 149 Battalion, Ojo Cantonment, Lagos State, in continuation of army formations in the 81 Division of the service.

The Army chief ’s call came on the heels of activities of some “disgruntled and unpatriotic elements” in the service that use the social media to spread misinformation to those outside the system. Said he: “One trend that is also dangerous to the service we all cherish is the misuse of the social media. I urge you to be careful of social media.
Those of you that like to use Facebook, Twitter, and other social media to report the Army as if you are not in the Army, what you do not know is that you have been undoing the systems that you are part of.
“You can twit on social issues. Do not twit about our locations, equipment, weapons and ammunition. What has that got to do with you? I hope you have not come to undo the system before you enlisted. I urge you to desist from reporting the Army.”
The Army chief also used the occasion to dispel insinuations that soldiers allowances are not being paid. He maintained that the Nigerian Army has, under his watch, paid operational allowances upfront even before the normal time of payment.
