As Nigerians prepare for the 2015 general elections scheduled for February, next year, members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday said there was no alternative to President Goodluck Jonathan as the race for Aso Rock Presidential Villa heightens.
All stakeholders in the ruling party present at the first National Summit of all Goodluck Support Groups held in Abuja said emphatically that “there is no vacancy in Aso Rock come 2015.”
Minister of Youth Development, Mr Boni Haruna, who spoke on behalf of the FEC members with support from six others, said members of the federal cabinet had taken a stand on the candidature of President Jonathan and had concluded that “there is no vacancy in Aso Rock come 2015.”
He said it would be foolhardy for anyone to think the president “doesn’t deserve a second term in office,” adding that the President “has outperformed his predecessors in office and, therefore, should continue in office to see through his developmental agenda for the country.”
Adopting Jonathan on behalf of the PDP governors, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Mr Godswill Akpabio, said: “One term is not enough for President Jonathan to complete his transformation agenda.”
He said: “The transformation of Mr. President and Nigeria, one term is not enough for it to happen. That is why I came to assure you that I have, together with you, three solutions for 2015. The first solution is Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the second solution is Dr Ebele Jonathan and the third solution is Dr Ebele Jonathan.
“The eagle is not only the largest bird in the sky, the eagle has convectious wings and it rises above the storm. When other birds are running away from the storm, the eagle flies above the storm, getting it excited, then it starts to cry out with excitement.”
Continuing, he said: “When I look behind you, I see insurgency, people trying to distract the eagle, people exploding bombs, people trying to kidnap our children, but in the midst of the storm, the eagle goes and flies above the storm and lets out a cry of joy.
“We are gathered here because he has proven himself with humility, with steadfastness. Nigeria today is celebrated as the largest economy in Africa; it did not happen in any other person’s time, it happened when the eagle has recognised the challenges of the human.
“My heart goes out to the Chibok girls and all those who are missing due to the insurgency, but there again is a storm. My assurance to you all is that with our dear president we will fly above the storm, the challenges you see today, you will see them no more. So, I am paying special tribute to our men and women in uniforms for their daily sufferings, steadfastness and commitment to bring peace to Nigeria. Together we shall conquer.”
In his address, the convener of the event and Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufai Alkali, said despite the security challenges, “the larger framework of Nigeria being a united, strong and prosperous country remains unshaken.”
He said the summit was not just another jamboree, but a platform to create synergy and a productive interface among all support groups who were working towards the same goal.
“It is an opportunity for Nigerians across the country to strengthen the bonds of unity and publicly showcase those time-honoured values that bind us together,” he said.
Leaders, patrons and directors of the Goodluck Support Groups of the over 7,000 organisations with over 80 million membership, in their communiqué, said: “It is in the interest of Nigeria and all Nigerians that his Transformation Agenda should continue beyond 2015.”
“President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan should step forward and contest for 2015 presidential election; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should nominate Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as its presidential candidate for 2015 presidential election.”
