North’s over-reliance on oil money coming from Niger Delta portends great disaster for the region. The president of Civil Rights Congress and senatorial aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Shehu Sani yesterday said that the
Sani who made the statement while addressing railway pensioners and workers at Kaduna Junction, headquarters of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) operations in the state, said disaster awaits Northern Nigeria for its continued survival on Niger Delta’s oil money which formed the monthly federal allocations accruing to the 19 Northern states.
The rights activist added that the poor region will be in perpetual slavery if its people do not resist money politics and vote for credible leaders to man leadership positions.
Sani further explained that the region must resist corrupt leaders for the emergence of responsible leadership.
He said, “Time has passed that Northern states would continue to survive on Niger Delta’s oil money; our states are bereft of any idea that will generate revenue to run our affairs. There is no single state in the North that can pay one month salaries of workers without federal allocation.
“And federal allocation is derived from the sale of Niger Delta oil; this is dangerous and disastrous in the future. Is it possible for someone to be feeding you without controlling you? Our visionary leaders like Sir Ahmadu Bello foresaw all these dangers, yet our leaders betrayed the cause of common good. If today, Nigeria splits, the North is in danger”.
“We must resist money politics and ensure only credible people are elected, we must protect our votes, we are only number one in population. We have highest number of senators, governors, local governments, councilors but have highest numbers of beggars and oppressed citizens,” he added,
Responding, leader of the pensioners, Mohammed Muntaka Aliyu said their pension is 5, 000 each and that they will work against monetization of politics in view of its negative implication.
The gathering ended with prayers for peace and unity among northern Muslims and Christians.Source: Leadership
