REPS JOSTLE FOR TAMBUWAL’S SEAT

Serious political manoeuvering is going on in the House of Representatives over who succeeds the Speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, should he move to the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, as being expected.
The Speaker’s defection is expected to take place between now and Tuesday, according to sources.
Our correspondent learnt that the Peoples Democratic Party,
PDP, lawmakers are angling over who should replace Tambuwal and one name that has come up is that of the Leader of the House, Hon. Mulikat Adeola.
Adeola was the choice of the PDP and the Presidency for the Speaker’s position which was zoned to the South-West but was lost to Tambuwal during a political horse-trading that made nonsense of the ruling party’s zoning formula.
PDP lawmakers had defied their party and with the support of the APC ensured the emergence of Tambuwal. Now, it was gathered that both the PDP and the Presidency had thrown their weight behind the House Leader as the new Speaker.
It was also gathered that Tambuwal had what a source called Plans A and B in ensuring that he was not disgraced out of office when he eventually left.
The Plan A, it was gathered, was to continuously adjourn sitting or invade sitting for the time being so as not to attract too much attention to him and to give him sympathy.
The Plan B was to support a candidate that would maintain the status quo till the expiration of the seventh assembly.
It was gathered that the Chairman, House Defence Committee, Hon. Bashir Adamu, was being considered since he is one of the closest ally of the Speaker.
His candidature was supported because they believed that he would maintain all the existing structure when the Speaker becomes an ordinary member.
Tambuwal is expected to contest the governorship of Sokoto State next year on the platform of APC.
On Monday, he attended the party’s stakeholders’ meeting in the state where the Governor, Aliyu Wamakko, described him as a member of the state’s political family.
The governor also praised Tambuwal’s loyalty and doggedness against all odds.
He had said: “I appreciate all of you, the people of Sokoto State for supporting me since 2007 till date. I appreciate and thank all stakeholders both at the state and national level and want to say that now is the time for me to step aside for a new ALU.
“I appreciate all of you for standing by me against the wish of the opposition. Now let me state that all eyes are on the Speaker, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. Therefore, I want to inform the gathering that the Speaker has been a member of the APC since its inception. I only asked him to remain in the PDP until the time of the nomination of the party standarad bearer.
He also explained that though Tambuwal might not have been with the party all this while, however, he had kept faith with his political root and protected the interest of the state.
“We have sent you to Abuja to go and experience the flame of political fire, you have tested it and came out victorious. You are now with us as one family.”
