The Federal Government has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Sulaiman Abba, to dismantle road blocks for revenue collection on highways across the nation.
The National Economic Council (NEC) made the call at the Presidential Villa in Abuja Thursday at a meeting chaired by Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo.
Lagos State Deputy Governor Victoria Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire told State House correspondents after the meeting that the council urged the IGP to enforce the directives for the dismantling of road blocks for revenue collection on the highways across Nigeria.
She said this followed the presentation of the brief by the Ministerial Implementation Committee on Harmonisation of Taxes and Levies across the federation.
She said the NEC passed some resolutions and directed the committee to carry out further activities and present an updated report to the council.
She said the council also directed the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, the Joint Tax Board and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation to commence the process of amending the VAT Act with emphasis on the review of tax rate.
Adefulire said the NEC resolved that six Attorney-Generals representing the six geo-political zones should be invited for a meeting to review the proposed amendment to the Act.
She said the following states' Attorney generals were therefore nominated by council for the assignment; Bayelsa for South-South, Enugu for South-East, Borno for North-East, Lagos for South-West, Kebbi for North- West and Plateau for North-Central.
According to her, the NEC also approved the schedule containing the reviewed list
of taxes and levies collectable by the three tiers of government for publication by the Joint Tax Board (JTB).
She added that the council also directed all the relevant agencies at state levels to collaborate on resolving all issues associated with the mining of solid minerals across the federation and make appropriate recommendations.
