PRESIDENTIAL TICKET: ATIKU BEST SUITED TO FIGHT CORRUPTION, SAYS LOYALIST

A former Vice-President and presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has been described as one of the most ideal personalities to champion the crusade against corruption in the country.
A chieftain of the APC and former National Secretary of the defunct Action Congr
ess (AC), Chief Kingsley Okafor, said Atiku has been a victim of orchestrated witch-hunting probe panels, which had always found nothing against him despite all contrived allegations.

Okafor, who spoke with THISDAY in Abuja at the weekend, also said the entry of Atiku into APC had strengthened the electoral chances of the opposition party and sent jitters through the spines of the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“Atiku has been one of the most investigated senior government official and if you have investigated a man for almost all his life in politics, and nothing was found nor was he indicted, I don’t see where you should look for any better candidate to fight corruption. Atiku is an embodiment of that struggle for a true Nigeria,” he said.

Okafor, who did not hide his preference for Atiku to pick the APC presidential ticket, said the party owes it a duty to Nigerian generations unborn to select a leader with the requisite capacity to address the numerous developmental challenges confronting the nation.
“I think that in choosing the candidate for our party, we are going to consider a lot of variables not just a parochial aspect of a hype that is created by the press or whatever.
“That opinion is in the realm of speculation, its in the realm of hypothesis, if you remember, when APC was formed, the original members were the CPC, ACN and the faction of APGA but as at the time Atiku joined was when the soul and liver of the party was put in place.
“If you look at APC, it wasn’t reckoned with as it is today until the time Atiku came in. But I remember that it was when Atiku joined APC that the five governors joined and then others began to join the party.”
