WE ARE FAR AHEAD OF OPPOSITION —JONATHAN

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, boasted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is far ahead of the opposition, saying that no matter what they may do they cannot reach the level of the ruling party.
He also warned against politics of “do or die” within the ruling party as he assured that every member would be accommodated.
Speaking at a special l
uncheon organised to wind up the activities of the Presidential Declaration Committee (PDC) in the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, he observed that there was a huge gap between the way of reasoning of the PDP and the opposition. The President accused the opposition of noise making, even when they had nothing concrete to offer to Nigerians.
He said unlike the opposition, the ruling party worked hard everyday to add value to the country, adding that it would continue to do so.
He said: “In the Nigerian political history, this is one period that we really have a lot of opposition coming up everyday. But for your support probably we couldn’t have achieved the little we have achieved.
“But no matter the lies people tell, punctured stories and so on, we have been very committed and you keep supporting us, we remain grateful.
“I’m yet to see those who can beat PDP. They will continue to make the noise but they cannot beat us because the gap between PDP and others is astronomical.
“The way we do things and the way they do things is very different. The way we talk and the way they talk is very different. The way we reason and the way they reason is very different.
“Our commitment to transform this country and their thinking about Nigeria is very different. And I promise you my party men and women and indeed all Nigerians that with your support, collectively we must move this country to where we want it to be.
“Everyday, every week and every month we must add something, we must change and continue to change.
“They will continue to make noise but they cannot reach us because the gap between us is astronomical. The way they reason and the way we reason is very different. Every time, we must add something for change.”
As he dissolved the PDC, Jonathan thanked committee and the PDP for creating the enabling environment for him to accept the call by Nigerians him to contest next year’s presidential election.
Similarly, he expressed appreciation for the support himself and Vice President Namadi Sambo were receiving at a time he said opposition was mounting.
“This is the time we have opposition everyday but for your support, we would not have reached where we are,” he said.
Describing himself as a privileged aspirant following his adoption as the sole presidential candidate of the party by all its organs, the President appealed to elective office aspirants not to regard the race as a do or die affair.
He said: “For my other colleagues, the PDP aspirants for various levels of election, though I’m also an aspirant, party has given me some kind of privilege. I am now a privileged aspirant, but it is after the convention that I can say clearly that I am the candidate, but I am a privileged aspirant.
“Some of you are also privileged aspirants. From what I have heard, some of you have been endorsed by your constituencies. So, aspirants for the various levels of election from the state assemblies, House of Representatives, the senate and the governorship I wish you success.
“And let me use this unique opportunity to plead with all of us who are aspiring for electoral offices that the world does not begin and end with the office you are looking for.
“Sometimes, you would be looking for an office, you may not be able to get it for one reason or the other. Let us say somebody blocked you, so be it. Let somebody block you. But if God wants something better for you, even after that blocking you will get something else.
“I plead with all of us that we should not play the do or die; ‘except I get it, let the party sink.’
“We are taking inventory of all what is happening in all the states and I promise that we will try and use as many people as possible.
“There are challenges in some states. People may deliberately block you. You may even be the best candidate in that particular constituency but let us move ahead.
“In my own life, the things I look for I hardly get. It’s what I don’t even think about that sometimes that I get. And I believe most of you will smile.
“But collectively, first and foremost, let us unite the party, work together for our collective victory and I believe after that we will smile.”
In his remark, the National Chairman of the PDP Dr. Ahmed Muazu, congratulated the president for what he said he has done for the country.
He described Jonathan as “the most successful leader in recent times” noting how successful his presentation during his declaration for the presidential contest was.
He said: “I wanted your presentation to be the very best and I told you. You impressed me. Everything was truly presidential.
Many Nigerians who watched it are impressed especially for your answering the call to declare for 2015.”
The party boss prayed that God would continue to protect and give the President additional wisdom and courage for the next four years to continue to lead the nation.
Also speaking the chairman of the PDC and former acting National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Haliru Mohammed, expressed gratitude and appreciation to Jonathan for honouring the PDC with the luncheon , saying that it “shows he is a caring and appreciative president.”
He said the committee members were proud to have been chosen to create the platform for Jonathan to answer the call to contest the election.
Mohammed observed that the level of support for the President at the venue of the declaration was an indication that “the PDP is still the party of choice in Nigeria and that you have been chosen by all orgns of the party, you symbolize what is PDP in Nigeria and will take us to the Promised Land.”
“We believe what we saw at the arena is a prediction of what will happen in February 2015,” he added.
