About 70 percent of the states of the federation have not been able to pay staff emoluments in the past four or more months.
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, stated this Wednesday while addressing journalists in Government House, Owerri.
“Only about 30 percent of states of the federation are currently paying staff salaries regularly. About 70 percent of the states are owing salaries. This is so, especially since the down-turn of the nation’s economy”, Okorocha said.
He said that he remains determined to pay salaries and allowances of staff regularly because he has a lot of enemies in the state.
“I am determined to pay staff salaries regularly because I have a lot of enemies in the state, who are after me.
They are determined to run me down and I am no prepared to give them that opportunity to get at me”, Okorocha said.
According to the Governor, the government is owing only N12 billion as loans, adding that he is determined to set a standard that those coming after me will find it difficult to uphold.
“I have set a standard that those coming after me will find a bit difficult to uphold. The truth is that if those coming after me do not perform, the people will react annoyingly”, Okorocha said.
While saying that he is making sacrifice so that it will be well with the citizenry, Okorocha equally disclosed that he does not have anybody as a god-father.
On the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Governor said he would have emerged the candidate if not for the gang-up of his fellow governors.
He likened General Muhammadu Buhari as “an interventionist president that has all it takes to stop the Boko Haram”.
“Buhari dealt effectively with Maitasine. There is not much difference between Maitasine and Boko Haram. I urge Nigerians to give Buhari a chance to lead this country”, Okorcha said.
