NIGER State governor, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has said most governors, who are supposed to be the chief security officers of their respective states, have become “toothless bull dogs,” following the inability of the governors to mobilise security agencies in their states to fight the increasing insurgents and myriads of crisis across the country.
The governor’s remarks came on the heels of the recent bombing of the Jumat Mosque in Kano city, last Friday, during which several lives were lost.
“We (governors) need some sort of respect, as the federating units are now toothless bulldogs; many commissioners of police are not taking directive from their governors,” he said.
He said with the increasing spate of insecurity in many parts of the North, it was now imperative that state governments should be allowed to have their own police, saying that earlier opposition to the issue by the northern state governors forum was because they felt the federal police would be in position to provide adequate security for lives and property in the states.
Governor Aliyu, who is also the chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum’ said all the 19 governors in the region and top traditional rulers across the Northern part of the country would soon meet to take a joint position on the escalating insecurity in the region and the issue of state police.
