Barely 24 hours to the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to Imo State as part of his presidential campaign for the February 14 election, an aide to the state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, who is also the General Manager of the Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA), Chief Emma Ugorji, has been arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS) for allegedly defacing and destroying the President’s billboards and flex banners.
The action, which was allegedly traced to personnel of the OCDA was said to have led to the arrest of the general manager. Prior to the development, Owerri, the state capital, had been branded by the President’s billboards and banners by the PDP, which had intensified its preparations ahead of President Jonathan’s visit to the state. However, it was gathered that some of the banners have been defaced, a development which led to the arrest of the governor’s aide.
It would be recalled that last year when Jonathan visited the state to receive defectors and returnees into the PDP, a similar incident occurred with all the banners, buntings, flex goodwill messages and decorations at the Imo airport destroyed by another close aide to the governor, an incident that also led to the arrest of the perpetrators. Only recently, the billboard of the PDP governorship candidate for Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, located at the Township School area along Wetheral Road, Owerri, was also destroyed by agents of the OCDA.
Ihediohia Campaign Organisation had lamented the destruction of the billboard by OCDA, saying all the necessary fees including internally generated revenue (IGR), APCON and OCDA land space charges were fully paid
