THE Presidency last night described a statement credited to the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, that President Goodluck Jonathan's administration is not serious in fighting corruption and insurgency as cheap blackmail and spread of falsehood.
Reacting to Mohammed's attack on Jonathan, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said that the attack, coming barely 48 hours after Jonathan had solicited for constructive engagements by politicians ahead of the forthcoming elections, wondered why Mohammed had chosen to ignore such noble and patriotic appeal.
According to Abati: “It is a pity that Lai Mohammed is starting off in the new year mounting his habitual nonsense.
“Anybody who listened carefully to the President and has followed the activities of government closely will see very clearly that his administration is committed to fighting insurgence and corruption.
“It has also shown political will in strengthening the security process to deepen their capacity to win the war against terror.
“Many of our security agents have had to pay the supreme sacrifice in waging this war. When Mohammed ignored the efforts of government and insults the memory and heroism of these patriots.
“Jonathan has always appealled to the opposition not to play politics with issues of national security. Obviously, politics and personal ambition are more important to Mohammed and his masters.”
On corruption, Abati said: “This administration is committed to fighting corruption and has always done so. By bring up the issue in his new year statement, the President was reemphasising the importance of the war against corruption.
“On new year day, the President re-emphasised the importance he attaches to the war against corruption and it is such a clear message that should not be too complicated for Mohammed to understand. But characteristically, Mohammed and his masters saw in that an opportunity to play cheap politics.
“What need to be said is to refer Mohammed to the President's charge to the political class in the new year message.”
Abati added: “The President had advised the political class to be decorous, civil, statesmanly and patriotic from this year. But less than 48 hours later, Mohammed has chosen to be indecorous, uncivil and uncouth.
“We hope that this is not the style of campaign that the APC has chosen to deploy for the 2015 election.”
