Campaign team in the South-West for President Goodluck Jonathan has described a statement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against Yoruba leaders, over the endorsement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the March 28 presidential election as uncouth and consistent with the antecedent behaviour and utterances of the opposition party and its principal actors.
Mr Garba Shehu, the campaign publicity director of Muhammadu Buhari and the APC’s presidential candidate, had, in a recent statement, said the endorsement of President Jonathan by confab conferees from the south-west was predicated on spurious and utterly dishonest reasons, adding that the real reason for the endorsement was because of their personal economy.“Some of them had their personal finances transformed by way of juicy but dubious security contracts and handsome cash largesse by the government of Dr Jonathan,” Shehu said.
Reacting to the remark, the South-West PDP in a statement issued on Sunday by Akin Osuntokun, media coordinator, presidential campaign council South-West chapter, said “like any sane and rational person, our first reaction to the gutter snipe insult on Yoruba leaders by the APC, was that ‘no, this cannot possibly be true’ even though it is consistent with the antecedent behaviour and utterances of the APC and its principal actors, we thought that no cultured and well brought up person will degenerate to this depraved and primitive level in defaming the authentic leadership of the Yoruba nation and by extension the whole Yoruba people.”
The party mentioned Dr Kunle Olajide, Dr Femi Obayori, Senator Femi Okunrounmu, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Mr Yinka Odumakin, Mr Remi Olatubora, Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, Sir. Samuel, A. Adetuyi, Dr Amos A. Akingba, Chief Olu Falae, Chief Sola Ebiseni, Lady Yemi Mahmud-Fasominu, Ogundipe Lanre, Chief Richard Akinjide, Mr Wale Ajani, Mr. Adekanmbi Ayodele, Honourable Salvador Moshood Adegoke and Otunba Gani Adams among the set of distinguished personalities, who represented the Yoruba nation at last year’s national confab.
adding that the same set were the leaders who teamed up with other distinguished Yoruba icons to endorse the candidacy of President Jonathan for the 2015 presidential election.
It said their endorsement was predicated on the commitment of the Jonathan-led government to the implementation of the confab resolutions, particularly given the fact that they touched on elements of the Yoruba agenda at the confab.
“If we are talking of credible Yoruba political leadership can anybody do better than this array of eminent individuals?.
“These are the people that the APC through its spokesperson Mr Garba Shehu, has chosen to denigrate and criminalise” the PDP registered, adding that it “consider it asinine that any group can predicate its support for Jonathan on his promise to respect any agreement……ad nauseum”.
The PDP said further that the first observation “on this remarkable display of uncouth and uncultured behaviour is that the APC can adequately make its point without recourse to foul and lowlife verbiage,” adding that “the intention therefore is to deliberately insult these Yoruba leaders who tower above any leader APC can offer, in integrity, credibility and professional accomplishment”.
