ABDULSALAMI: LET’S HELP JONATHAN FOR PEACEFUL HAND-OVER

Former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar has called on Nigerians to help President Goodluck Jonathan in handing over peacefully to the president-elect, retired General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abdulsalami made the call while addressing State House journalists yesterday after a closed-door meeting with
Jonathan at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Abubakar, who headed the National Peace Committee for 2015 General Elections led his members to the meeting with Jonathan before the final collation of the presidential election result by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He said not only had Jonathan congratulated Buhari and accepted defeat in the presidential election, but had also proved his assertion that his ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian.

The ex-Nigeria leader said members of the committee were at the Villa to thank Jonathan for this statesmanship, noting that in the history of Nigeria, this was the first time a contestant had congratulated his rival.
Abdulsalami, who said the committee was “spell-bound” that Jonathan had congratulated Buhari, urged all the politicians especially those celebrating and those “sorrowing” to be moderate and give peace a chance in the country.
He said his committee also thanked all Nigerians and the international community for their support during the elections.
The former head of state also emphasised that the elections had been very peaceful despite some hitches.
Abdulsalami asked those aggrieved by the outcome of the election seek redress as stated in the Electoral Act.
He specifically appealed to the youth to give peace a chance and accept that Jonathan himself has accepted defeat, saying nobody should go and raise “any eyebrow and cause any destabilisation of this country.”
