SPEAKERSHIP: NIGER DELTA INSISTS ZONE DESERVES SLOT

As the battle among the various interest groups and geo-political zones for the next Speaker of the House of Representatives gathers momentum, members of the Niger Delta Peoples Conference (NDPC) has urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the plum position to the South-South geo-political zone of the country.
They als
o recommended the choice of either the lawmaker representing Owan federal constituency, Pally Iriase and his counterpart representing Akoko-Edo federal constituency, Peter Akpatason, all from Edo State and top ranking lawmakers for consideration for the plum seat.
In a statement issued by Mr. Iyamu Osaro Culture and made available to newsmen in Benin City, the state capital, the group said the choice of either of the two lawmakers have become necessary to reflect the principles of the federal character as provided for in the nation’s constitution.
Iyamu pointed out that “as far as South-East geo political zone could not make it to the exalted seat, in order to be fair to all, the Speakership position of the Federal House of Representatives should be zoned to South-South geo political zone under the leadership of the APC, without any opposition or agitation from other geo-political zones.”
He stated that Edo State contributed 45 per cent votes during the March 28 general election among all the states in the oil rich region.
According to him, “Viewing from the standpoint of the just concluded presidential elections where Gen. Muhammadu Buhari emerged the winner under the platform of the APC, it is on record that it is only in Edo State that the President-elect was able to obtain about 45 per cent votes in the South-South.”
They further argued that the President-elect hails from Katsina State in the NorthWest geo-political zone, the Vice President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo comes from Ogun State in the South West zone; it is believed that the Senate President should be zoned to the North Central which has made the South East and South-South to lose painfully.
