Is it true you were deployed to Lagos for a special project?
THE press has seriously misquoted me, to the extent that they said that if one policeman were killed, my men would kill 20 civilians. That is not rue. It is not correct. When I assumed office as the AIG in charge of the zone, I went on tours and talked with my officers and men, I told them how to conduct themselves. I advised them on what to do, especially during and after the elections. How do we plan for the election, we must sit down and plan. I said as police officers we must learn to be impartial, we must be neutral. And there must be no unnecessary exchange of pleasantries.
Policemen at the various poling booths are not supposed to carry arms. I said we have adopted men of Mobile Force for quick response. This quick response squad will be located within a particular radius. So that where there is crisis, because it is not unusual that thugs know that police men on duty in the poling stations are unarmed and would go and attack them and carry away electoral materials. They may also attack those coming to cast their votes. This quick response squad will be properly armed with teargas canisters and guns. The squad will quickly be drafted to the poling booths any time there is an attack.

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and rights activist, on Thursday took over as lead counsel for the prosecution of a suit seeking the removal of Mbu Joseph Mbu as assistant inspector-general of police in charge of Zone 2. Tope Alabi, a lawyer, had filed the suit before the federal high court in Lagos, seeking Mbu’s removal over alleged abuse of powers. The suit was specifically hinged on a statement made by Mbu threatening to kill 20 civilians in the place of a policeman that is killed during the forthcoming elections. At the resumed hearing on Thursday, Falana announced appearance for the plaintiff and moved an ex-parte application on his client’s behalf. The application was for leave to serve the police service commission with the suit in Abuja.

MBU DENIES ORDER TO SHOOT CIVILIANS
Former Rivers State Commissioner of Police and current Assistant-Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Lagos, has said he was misquoted by reports that he ordered policemen to kill 20 civilians for every officer killed in the coming general elections.
Mbu in a statement signed by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olugbemiga Adeoye, explained that he only “advised his policemen not to be cowardly but to be guided by Force Order 237 on the use of their firearms.”
According to him, the firearms are not only meant to defend themselves but also others “including fellow police officers when their lives are in danger.”
The AIG, who said he was quoted out of context, believes that reports on the issue have been fraught with political undertone.

MY MEN’LL KILL IN SELF DEFENCE, MBU INSISTS
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Lagos, Mr. Joseph Mbu, has said that there is no big deal in the number of people policemen under his command can kill in self-defence.
He said since policemen were also human beings, they should be ready to take revenge on any violent group(s) that might attack them or other innocent citizens.
Mbu spoke with some journalists in Olorunsogo, Ogun State, during the inauguration of the Olorunsogo II Power Station by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The journalists had approached the AIG, who led policemen to provide security for the President at the event, to clarify the controversial statement credited to him that 20 civilians would be hacked down for every policeman killed.

HOW I TAMED AMAECHI -MBU
Can you give us an insight into what the people of Lagos and Ogun states, which are under Zone II, should expect during your tenure?
You know my antecedents. I’m passionate about my job and committed to the discharge of my duties. This I will do very well. First and foremost, I will start with my policemen. From what I have seen so far, many of them are not disciplined, so I will ensure I revive that in the zone. The other day I was going round, I saw some policemen in mufti; some wore bathroom slippers and were carrying AK-47 rifles. That is the custom of armed robbers and such appearance terrifies members of the public.

MY SUCCESSOR WILL BE TOUGHER –MBU
THE past Police Commissioner in Rivers State, Mr. Joseph Mbu, has stated that those that called for his redeployment were not fair to him.
He also said contrary to insinuations, he was not in the state to do anybody’s bidding.
The police commissioner, who was recently posted to the Federal Capital Territory, spoke in Port Harcourt on Saturday when he joined the new state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike.
The former state police boss urged his successor to ensure that vehicles with tinted glasses were thoroughly searched, adding that occupants of such vehicles could be political assassins.
He said he was leaving the state with his head high because the state did not record any political assassination during his stay as the police commissioner.
“I did not come here with a script as alleged by few propagandists. I have discharged my duties with diligence and for the past one year, there has been no political assassination in Rivers State.

WHY AMAECHI IS FIGHTING ME, BY MBU
Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, in this interview speaks on the genesis of his problem with Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. Excerpts:
• The governor doesn’t like me because I refuse to fight his perceived political enemies.
• Police did not shoot Senator Abbe
WHAT led to your face-off with the Governor?
All the propaganda by the governor is aimed at pushing me away from Rivers State by force so that a puppet that the governor can kick and shout at could be posted. Before I tell you the story, it is good for you to know my kind of person and my philosophy of life.
My name is Mbu Joseph Mbu. I am a graduate of Political Science from University of Lagos. I joined the Police in order to serve this nation. I was given employment with the Nigeria Customs Service, but I preferred to join the Police. I have held various appointments in the Police.
