Ahmed Nazif, Egypt’s prime
minister under ousted President Hosni Mubarak, was sentenced to three years in
jail on Thursday for illegally acquiring land and embezzling public funds.
Nazif was also fined 9 million
Egyptian pounds ($ 1.48 million) for making illegal profits from a
public-interest company.
According to prosecutors, Nazif made 64
million Egyptian pounds by illegally acquiring land and an Alexandria
apartment, adding that he also made private profits from a public institution
he founded.
The
60 year-old Nazif was remanded in custody April 2011 as one of
several senior officials detained in the days after Mubarak’s overthrow
