Minister
of Aviation, Stella Oduah, has described as spurious and wicked, allegations
from Arik that the agencies and unions picketed it because she demanded a five
per cent equity holding in the airline.
Arik’s managing director, Chris Ndulue,
at a press conference on Thursday alleged that the Ministry of Aviation’s
hostility against Arik was on account of an alleged equity demand by the
minister which it claimed to have turned down.
But the minister’s spokesman, Joe Obi,
said: “The first impulse is to totally ignore this groundless falsehood, except
that it will send the wrong signals to the general public.
“The five percent equity story is
without any foundation whatsoever. It is absurd, malicious and ultimately
laughable. The minister could not have contemplated acquiring a stake in any
airline, let alone Arik Air that is groaning from a crippling N85.4 billion
debt overhang.”
According to him: “The minister has
directed her lawyers to seek legal redress for this malicious allegation by
Arik Air.”
