N1b donation row: Blackmailers after me, says Tukur

NATIONAL Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, yesterday raised the alarm over what he referred to as an attempt by blackmailers to embarrass him before members of the party and Nigerians.

It was reported recently that Tukur received a donation of N250 million each from Governors Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Danbaba Suntai (Taraba) and Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe) for his 77th birthday and launching of his biography, 'The Global Villager'. Tukur said the report was false and misleading as he never requested for any donation from anybody.
Tukur's Special Assistant (Media Matters), Alhaji Ujudud Shariff, said it was unfortunate that some Nigerians take delight in embarrassing those in public office with unsubstantiated reports.

He said: “Dr. Bamanga Tukur had never, at any time, requested or solicited for monetary donations for the launch of the book whether from any state government, public officer or any private individual. All donations were voluntarily made by friends and associates of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur whose family arranged and fully sponsored both his 77th birthday celebration and the book launch.

“Therefore, this premeditated calumnious report by the Online news was, at best, an interesting piece of fiction and junk journalism which has become a thriving past time of some sections of the media”.

Ujudud declared that the report is part of an agenda to blackmail the PDP National Chairman and to deprive him of his popularity among PDP supporters and stressed that the agenda will fail.

“We, therefore, call on the sponsors of the offending online news organ to cease or desist from this mischief of spreading falsehood and disaffection among Nigerians and PDP members.

“It is also important, fair and a professional decency for media outfits to be factual in their news reports, rather than exploiting readers occasional disposition to their news medium to cast aspersion on the PDP National Chairman and, at the same time, take the gullibility of reading public and event watchers for granted,” he concluded.
